Impunity Has Come Full Circle - Eze

The National Publicist of the New Peoples Democratic Party, (nPDP) Mr. Chukwuemeka Eze, in this interview with Nwaorgu Faustinus, says Impunity has come full circle under the current administration; Jonathan administration is intolerant of opposing views

Excerpt:

What is your faction, the New PDP protesting for?
I will rather use the word ‘demand’ instead of protest. The demands of the Alhaji Baraje led Peoples Democratic Party are actually based on the need to observe internal democracy or the democratisation of our great party, to allow due process and democratic norms to prevail in PDP as earlier envisioned and envisaged by the founding fathers of the party. In addition, as I said in a different place, we want a stop to the draconian and undemocratic tendencies of the present leadership of the party whereby a cabal controls the affairs of the party to the detriment of the majority members of the party.
Based on this, we are asking for the reversal of some of the undemocratic acts and actions so far taken by the party. They include the reversal of the unjust suspension of Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State; acceptance of Governor Amaechi as the  authentic Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum after he was duly elected by the majority votes of the governors, defeating his opponent, Governor David Jang of Plateau State, with 19 votes against Jang’s 16. We are also asking that the impunity in the Adamawa State chapter of the party, where Tukur has set up a parallel state exco contrary to all known norms of the party must be stopped, among others.

Can you throw light on the issue of harassment of your group by the agents of government?
It is very unfortunate that our people could be made to go through all sorts of harassment and embarrassment under a democratic set-up, which reminds us of the days of Abacha, where the constitutional and fundamental human rights of Nigerians were trampled upon.
For instance, contrary to the provisions of Chapter IV Sections 42, 43 and 44 of the Constitution, which guarantee our right as Nigerians to acquire and own property in any part of the country, our national secretariat and most of our state secretariats have been sealed off by the Police on the orders of those in power. This is despite the fact that we still have a court case against Bamanga Tukur and his National Working Committee.
Remember two weeks ago, the Federal Capital Territory Administration in its act to curry favour just to please President Jonathan singled out and sealed our national secretariat for demolition on the preposterous justification that it was formerly approved as a residential home. If your memory serves well, you will recall that the said property was used as the secretariat of the National Democratic Party (NDP), before New PDP acquired it – and the same FCTA kept mute! At that time, the FCTA did not realise that it violated land use, but it now wants to demolish the building in a hurry simply because the authorities perceive the new owner (New PDP) to be anti-government! What is more, the Adamawa State lodge, also in Abuja, which we were using as temporary national secretariat, has also been sealed off on the flimsy excuse that the area is not for commercial activities.
Just two days ago, our G7 governors meeting was invaded by the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Asokoro Police Unit, CSP Nnanna Ama. Ama ordered the meeting to be stopped, threatening to mobilize troops to abort it if his order was not obeyed. For a DPO to be sent not only to disrupt meeting of governors duly elected by Nigerians, but to also arrest them if they fail to heed his counsel is a sign that these people can decide to disrupt the association of any group of Nigerians at any time knowing that such an act is a breach of the constitution of our country. Impunity has come full circle.
The use of anti-graft agencies to hound our members is no longer news. Timipre Sylva, the former Governor of Bayelsa State, and Senator Bukola Saraki are two foremost examples.
On its part, the Nigeria Police, which has woefully failed to find a solution to the menace of Boko Haram, kidnapping, assassination and other criminal acts ravaging the country, has been given a fresh mandate to frame up our members and term them criminals in order to keep them at bay. The experiment has already started in Bayelsa, the home state of President Jonathan, where 85 per cent of the citizens have indicated interest to work against his second term ambition due to the total neglect of the state and the entire Niger Delta region by the present administration.
The Bayelsa State Police Command in its press release dated October 4, 2013 and signed by the Police Relations Officer, DSP Akhigwe Alex, on behalf of the State Police Commissioner, said, ‘Bayelsa State Command wishes to inform the general public that as a result of complaints from well-meaning citizens of Bayelsa State most of which borders on criminality against one Richard Poekene Kpodo, a high powered investigation committee headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police in-charge of Central Instigation Department has been set up to look into the various crimes allegedly committed by him and members of his syndicates.”

What is Richard Kpodo’s crime?
He has suddenly become a criminal by joining and becoming the state Chairman of the Baraje-led faction of the PDP in Bayelsa. Curiously, his present hunters have conveniently forgotten that this was the same man who was in the forefront of the Campaign Team of President Jonathan in 2011. His state secretary, Sidi D. Godwill, was the zonal youth leader of PDP. These two, together with all other key members of the Baraje-led PDP, can no longer visit Bayelsa State just because of politics!
This ruthless trampling on our fundamental human rights leaves no one in doubt that the Jonathan administration is intolerant of opposing views. Nigerians can now see what we meant when we said these people are no democrats. They are intent on turning our country into a banana republic where the rights of Nigerians no longer count. Nigerians should prepare for the worst because today it is New PDP, tomorrow it would certainly be somebody else.

Will your faction join APC?
The fact remains that we are today the most beautiful bride in Nigerian politics. We hold the key to Aso Rock come 2015, so if every political group wants to associate with us knowing very well that we would determine who stays in Aso Rock come 2015, so be it. Joining APC or we forming our own party depends on the outcome of our meeting with President Jonathan on our demands.
I am not saying anything new but merely repeating the recent assertion of Governor Babangida Aliyu, that the outcome of discussions between our Progressive Governors known as G7 and President Jonathan holds the key to our next move. The governor said, “There is no way you can wake up and say you are pulling out when you are already negotiating. You cannot pull out at this moment. The time for decision to be taken will be when we have concluded discussion with the President.”

What is your grouse against Jonathan?
We have nothing against President Jonathan as a person because he is a good man surrounded by wolves. Once he toes the path of democracy and have respect for rule of law, I will swim with him but if he continues turning a blind eye to the impunities being committed against the Rivers State people and the government, I can’t be part of his actions.

NASS Should Begin Immediate Probe of Enugu Maximum Prison

Transform Nigeria Citizens Initiative (TNCI) had expected alongside other Nigerians that the relevant authorities would have begun a probe into startling revelations by the Sun Newspaper of October 20, 2013 concerning illegal operations at Enugu Maximum Prison.

We hereby request for the National Assembly to beam their searchlight on the manner the prison authorities run the penal institution. Following the Sun reports, our independent investigations reveal that inmates at the Enugu Prisons truly undergo such inhuman ordeal in the hands of the Prison officials as revealed in the newspaper.

We are dismayed to learn that Enugu prison authorities which is funded by the taxpayers still force prisoners to pay a N2,000 fee to transport them from the prison to court for their trial; and if they fail to pay, they miss court hearings leading to further adjournments.

We also urge NASS to summon the prison authorities to explain why inmates should pay between N100 to N150 for a bucket of water when such water is freely provided from a borehole dug by the Federal Government for the inmates.

Our laws provide that an accused is deemed innocent until a relevant court of law rules otherwise; it thus becomes gross human abuse in a prison where majority of the inmates are awaiting trial, for officials to punish the inmates by rationing the free water to a maximum of two to three cups of drinking water daily while those who wanted more pay for it.

We further urge the honourable members and senators to commence an urgent investigation into reports that inmates pay N10, 000, N25, 000 or even up to N200, 000 to be allocated cells depending on the quality of the cell; a cell built by the government for the inmates.

We reiterate that these allegations are not mere rumours but TNCI has conducted independent investigations and can authoritatively say they are true.

We are aware that the Deputy Comptroller of Prisons, (DCP), Mustapha Attah reportedly said: “I provide the money for diesel for the tanker to bring water three times a day because the last time Water Board gave us water was five months ago?”

We ask; could the above claim be the reason why the prison boss sells the water to inmates?

Are the payments by prisoners made to help the Deputy Comptroller in recovering his expenditure? Were they his ‘personal funds’? Should an employee of the Federal Republic of Nigeria use his personal money to buy water daily for prisoners? Did the Enugu inmates contribute money to re-paint the Enugu Maximum Prison during a top prison official’s visit? Is it true that there is a task force set up by the Enugu Maximum Prison authorities, who wore green shirts and serve as the eyes of the Prison boss, to monitor all workers in the yard?

We request that NASS summons the Comptroller of Prisons to answer these queries. The Lawmakers should conduct an open hearing on the above matters and make their findings public and compel the appropriate executive organ of government to take necessary action on the matter including appropriate sanctions.

New PDP Welcomes APC’s Interest …. Door to Reconciliation in PDP Still Open – New PDP

The Alhaji Baraje Kawu led PDP says the increasing closeness between leaders of the New Peoples Democratic Party (New PDP) and those of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has raised questions in the minds of many Nigerians and fuelled speculations on the possible merger of the two parties.

The faction in a statement by its National Publicist, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze said, “Speculations along this line have heightened since last Tuesday’s inauguration of the Sokoto State University, where both APC and New PDP put up a strong presence, with our National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, leading a high-powered team that included former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governors Murtala Nyako of Adamawa, Musa Kwankwaso of Kano, Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers and Sule Lamido of Jigawa; as well as our National Secretary, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former Osun State governor, to the event.”

For Chief Eze, “the chemistry between the team and that of APC led by General Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was indeed unmistakable. The APC leaders have since then intensified the lobby for a marriage between both parties, even visiting some of our governors to directly invite them to join their party”.

Part of the statement reads:

“All these visits on our State Governors simply demonstrates how new status in the politics of Nigeria as the new Bride of Nigeria Politics and we hope to play the role as expected of us as we hold the key to Aso Rock come 2015.

“Some have interpreted this to mean that a political marriage may be imminent between the New PDP and APC. While nothing is impossible in politics, it is necessary to state that we have not at this point closed the door on the on-going negotiations between us and President Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the National Leader of our great party, PDP, the reformation of which is our preoccupation for now.

“However, even though we remain hopeful that wise counsel would prevail and our demands would be granted by the PDP, we, at the same time, feel comfortable in the company of APC since we share the same goal of rescuing our dear country, Nigeria, from the edge of the precipice and putting her firmly on the path of sustainable development.

“The presence of APC and PDP leaders in large numbers at the Sokoto State University inauguration is a positive development which raises hope for our fledgling democracy. It is a good example of politics of tolerance and cooperation which we consider necessary if the country is to experience peace and tranquillity, without which there could be no development.

“We heartily congratulate the administration of His Excellency, Governor Aliyu Wamakko, a good Ambassador of our great party, the PDP, on this laudable achievement, and pray that Sokoto State University does not only experience a smooth take-off but also develops into a model centre of academic excellence”, Eze concluded.

Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency …Mix-Up in Name Caused By INEC Since 1999. Problem Pre-dates Dakuku’s Present Era, says Hon. Jefferies Owor

The member of the House of Representatives for Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency from 1999 to 2007, Hon. Jefferies Owor, has absolved the present member, Hon. Dakuku Peterside of any blames regarding the mix-up in the constituency’s name. Hon. Owor placed the blame at the doorstep of the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a press release personally signed by the former lawmaker emailed to NF-Reports, Owor said: “For the past four months, I have observed with dismay, the negative manner in which some persons, especially of Andoni ethnic nationality are going about the error observed in the name of our constituency.”

Continuing, Hon. Owor stated: “Hon. Dakuku Peterside should not be blamed or accused for the error observed in the name of our constituency. I also saw it that way in Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) records, when I assumed office [in 1999]. However, I did take it up with INEC and it was corrected; but the mistake kept repeating itself.”

“I understand that stakeholders are seriously working together to ensure that the error is urgently corrected permanently,” Owor stated.

Hon. Owor, therefore, appealed to the people of the federal constituency to close ranks and work for the unity and progress of the area.

It would be recalled that an error by the INEC since 1999 has led to ‘Andoni’ disappearing on some official government documents sometimes. This error has continued to rear its ugly head despite the best efforts of the past and present occupiers of the constituency seat at the House of Representatives since 1999 to effect a correction.

Despite the meticulous explanation made by the former lawmaker during the occasion of the send forth party held for 10 post graduate students of the federal constituency to study in various UK universities by Hon Dakuku Peterside, some mischief makers have continued to misinform the people for ulterior reasons. Last week, one Ugwem Oga Fingesi claiming to be the President of the National Union of Andoni Students had repeated the charge on a Port Harcourt based radio station, Love 97.7 FM deliberately blaming the mix-up on the present lawmaker representing the area, Hon. Dakuku Peterside.

New PDP Set to Receive 5 More PDP Governors, Appeals Court Ruling

New PDP Set to Receive 5 More PDP Governors, Appeals Court Ruling

The New Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) under the leadership of Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje has filed a notice of appeal over last week’s ruling by a Federal High Court, Abuja, restraining it from using PDP’s logo and colours and recognizing the Alhaji Bamabga Tukur-led National Working Committee (NWC) as the authentic leadership of the party.

The notice of appeal according to an online statement by Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, the spokesperson of the nPDP was filed on Thursday morning of 24 October, 2013, by its Team of lawyers led by Raji (SAN) before the Federal High Court, Abuja, presided over by Honourable Justice Evoh Chukwu, who ruled against the splinter PDP last Friday.

“We are also seeking an injunction and a stay of execution of Honourable Justice Chukwu’s ruling”, the nPDP said.

The breakaway PDP noted that decision to file the appeal was taken at an emergency meeting of the New PDP National Working Committee (NWC) following the return of the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, from the 2013 pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

“The decision was taken after the NWC carefully studied last Friday’s ruling by the Federal High Court and after due consultations with our team of lawyers.

“We once more wish to reiterate that we remain convinced that we have a good case and are thus determined to ensure that Tukur and his cohorts are not allowed to hold sway as the leaders of our great party.

“Our teeming members and supporters should, therefore, entertain no fears whatsoever and should remain steadfast as we seek to legally establish our case and logically conclude our mission to rescue the PDP from anti-democratic forces so as to restore the noble vision of the party’s founding fathers.

“Finally, due to the busy schedules of our Governors and most of the Stakeholders our proposed G7/Stakeholders/NWC meeting slated for this week will now hold by next week. Venue and time will duly be communicated to members by our National Secretary. One of the major issues slated for discussion is how to receive our new members particularly the five additional PDP Governors who have indicated interest in joining us”.

Wike: A Traitor and Misfit - nPDP

Wike: A Traitor and Misfit - nPDP

The “New” Peoples Democratic Party says it read with dismay the statement credited to the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike that Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the breakaway Peoples Democratic Party led by Alhaji Baraje were behind the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, expressed its dismay in a statement saying, “We would have ordinarily ignored Wike’s outburst as the ranting of a confused and clueless minister but have decided to reply so as to set the record straight. We challenge Wike to produce evidence to back up his allegation or bury his head in shame forever”.

The “nPDP” questioned  if Gov. Amaechi or any other of their member that negotiated on behalf of the Federal Government in 2009 when it reached the agreement with ASUU, which it has inexplicably refused to honour, thus laying the foundation for the lingering strike that has mortgaged the future of innocent Nigerian youths? And did any member of New PDP negotiate on the part of ASUU during the recently deadlocked talks with the FG over the strike?

The faction noted that it was unfortunate for Wike to trivialise the issue and to ridicule himself, instead of committing himself towards finding a solution to the crippling strike. “Unfortunately, it is the actions and utterances of court jesters like Wike that have made perceptive Nigerians to describe the Goodluck Jonathan administration as a kindergarten government”, the faction said.

Mr Eze said, “For Wike to have made this statement against a group that ordered her members to fast and pray for this unfortunate strike for over a week and even set up a Committee under the Chairmanship of His Excellency, Gov Babangida Aliyu to proffer solutions on how to come out of the quagmire occasioned by Wike’s inability simply demonstrates the lack of wisdom on his side”.

Part of the statement reads:
“We are at a loss as to how a supposedly serious government should continue to retain such an incompetent and unserious mind as a Minister of the very strategic Ministry of Education in a country teeming with accomplished educationists and administrators if not for undemocratic motor-park democracy he specializes on.

“In any case, we are not overly surprised by Wike’s tirade because a man who could engineer the stoning of visiting State Governors from other parts of the country without caring a hoot about the consequences is capable of saying or doing anything, no matter how outrageous.

“Let us reiterate that should he ever make another derogatory statement about the Baraje led PDP, we will teach him some lessons on how to talk as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and he should note that New PDP is not Rivers State where he has because of his greed mess up governance!

“The fact remains that to say that Wike is a disaster as a Minister is to state the obvious. We advise him to minimize the damage which he is doing to the Jonathan administration by concentrating on his work instead of busying himself making enemies for the President whom he pretends to be loyally serving but whose downfall he is secretly plotting in keeping with his traitorous nature.

“Instead of President Jonathan addressing enemies within his cabinet he is busy persecuting and embarrassing his true friends and political associates that matters in his political calculations!

“A word is enough for the wise”.
