Natasha seeks practical plans for revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company

…..Denies being sponsored
……As House Committee begins investigation

A lawyer and social reformer, Barrister Natasha Akpoti, on Saturday expressed delight with the high degree of determination so far exhibited by Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello to move Ajaokuta Steel Company forward.

She also dismissed insinuations of being sponsored by some individuals in the country.

"As a governor, Yahaya Bello must be met daily with tons of ideas. Ajaokuta Kogi Nigeria Limited could have been one of those he ventured into based on recommendations best available to him at that moment in time. I hold no brief for him and I still believe that in the spirit of democracy, his government owes an explanation to the good people of Nigeria. However, while focusing ahead, it’s good to know Bello supports the call for TPE of Russia as technical partners and has openly appreciated the resilience of our advocacy. So I chose to hold His Excellency to his words" she said.

Akpoti who spoke to newsmen in Abuja Saturday disagreed with the thinking in some quarters that her recent friendship with Governor Bello was for her own selfish purposes.

"In the past months, there have been some relationships forged between the Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello and myself. Clearly, we are collaborating towards an accelerated resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel Company amongst others. This alliance will no way overturn or tamper with our code of ethics and societal ethos which has laid the foundation upon which we seek economic justice for Ajaokuta Steel Company and her captive mine - National Iron Ore Company, Itakpe both in Kogi State."

According to her, the involvement of the Kogi State Government in the alleged lopsided attempted acquisition of the steel complex via a vehicle registered as Ajaokuta Kogi Nigeria Limited as exposed during the March 1, 2018 presentation before the House of Representatives was all true.

"Whether such actions were taken with the full knowledge of Governor Yahaya Bello or not or in the best interest of the state and country or not shall be decided in the course of the House of Reps investigation which commences on Monday, June 4, 2018."

The leader of Ajaokuta/Itakpe Revival Movement provided what may well be an insight into the twists and turns in the journey to revive the steel company

"However, as every journey has a destination, so also before I embarked upon this Herculean task alongside millions of patriotic Nigerians; there was a destination at heart. This was unequivocally to pursue and influence good government decisions towards the judicious revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company and the steel sector in general. Without mincing words, we stood against its privatization and pressed for a Government to Government engagement between Russia and Nigeria in order to reengage the original builders TyazhPpromExport (TPE) directly as technical partners for a short term thereby cutting out the middle men/companies to help curb corruption and in turn, yield desired socio-economic benefit of the masses. Having set these goals, we embarked upon a journey we had absolute no control of its twists and turns. For three years, a lone voice became a movement of millions. Relationships were bruised, characters were smeared, lives threatened but most importantly patriotism grew as Nigerians from the North to South, East and West found a cause worth uniting and fighting for irrespective of religious and ethnic sentiments" she said.

Akpoti explained that as the case of Ajaokuta Steel Company, there was no cause for alarm as the company was on a sure path of revival.

"On the brighter side, Ajaokuta Steel Company is on a sure path of revival because the much needed political will is being stimulated across the tiers of government. I, alongside the reputable Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), African Iron and Steel Association (AISA) and a host of other professional stakeholders are working with the National Assembly to create a set of laws to establish a responsive and protective ecosystem for the steel sector. We are also advocating for the establishments of a Steel Development Authority (just like we had in the 70s). The rationale behind this is to promote the separation of powers which are presently mumbled up in the Ministry of Solid minerals. In essence, the Steel Authority shall oversee the operations and productivity of the steel sector; while the ministry shall serve as regulators for pricing, policy formulations and others. With all the right collaborations being set in place, however late, I have no doubt the resuscitation of Ajaokuta’s steel complex for the good of Nigeria will be a dream come true."

Akpoti excitely told newsmen that she decided to forge a healthy alliance to promote an accelerated resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel Company along agreed common grounds.

"From childhood, after the sudden demise of my father at the age of 49; I developed a great appreciation for the value of time being the most precious of resources. We can always make the money we lose, but never the time wasted. In addition, I am also one with great respect for authority especially in this part of the world where the pen is still mightier than the voices of the populace; so I had to apply reason to save time for the greater good of Ajaokuta and its delayed promises to Nigeria and her sinking economy. So after the expose of conspiracies on the floor of the National Assembly; wise elders counseled on the importance of managing time and authority. We as a movement had a choice to either spend the next moments agitating about the mistakes of the past or cutting our loses, call on the relevant parties together, especially the stakeholders in government and forge a healthy alliance to promote an accelerated resuscitation of Ajaokuta Steel company along agreed common grounds" she added.

Congresses that produced our Exco not before any court – Ojukaye

Congresses that produced our Exco not before any court – Ojukaye

The newly-elected Rivers State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree has stated that the APC Ward, Local Government and State Congresses that took place May 19, 20 and 21 respectively which saw to his emergence as the State Chairman were not a subject of any court action.

Hon. Flag-Amachree was reacting to a Port Harcourt High Court ruling Wednesday that purportedly annulled congresses held in the State by the APC.

“The reported annulment must be connected to the matter relating to the disputed May 5 and 12 Ward and Local Government APC Congresses of which our lawyers have actively been pursuing. As far as we are concerned, we were not served any fresh cause of action against the May 19, 20 and 21 congresses. It is unthinkable and unimaginable because no such linkage exists.”

Explaining further, Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree stated that it was absurd for anyone to talk about the new set of congresses even when the party counsels had filed a notice of preliminary objection against the jurisdiction of the court and the notice of appeal to that effect brought to the notice of the court over the May 5 and 12 congresses that the national leadership of APC eventually cancelled.

“We believe that the court knows that it is its duty to determine the matter of preliminary objections and other motions filed by APC counsels before it can question subsequent congresses or actions of the party. At this moment, there is no court action and/or order on the State Exco or all those that emerged at different levels of the party on May 19, 20 and 21 congresses.”

The State APC Chairman assured party faithful and the general public that there was no cause for alarm as the party will not waste time in taking any unfavourable court outcome to the highest possible level of appeal. He advised all party officers to go about their duty without let or hindrance.

Nigeria Vs Congo DRC Friendly: RVSG must act proactively to prevent arrival of Ebola in Rivers State – APC tells Wike

Nigeria Vs Congo DRC Friendly: RVSG must act proactively to prevent arrival of Ebola in Rivers State – APC tells Wike

As the spread of the dreaded disease, Ebola, continues across major towns in the Congo Democratic Republic (DRC) ahead of the friendly game between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Leopards of DRC in Port Harcourt on Saturday, the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress has called on Gov. Nyesom Wike not only focus on reaping from the razzmatazz the grade ‘A’ friendly brings to his empty celebration of 3 years in office, adding “he (Wike) must forget politics for a while and act to protect the lives of the people and residents of Rivers State.”

The APC in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr. Chris Finebone said, “the APC is not averse to the game going on in Port Harcourt as earlier scheduled, we are worried that the possibility of Ebola making its way into Rivers State may be lost on the lackadaisical and purposeless government led by Gov. Nyesom Wike in the State. We believe that a government that, for years, has been at sea over the soot enveloping Port Harcourt and environs may just be celebrating and backslapping while Ebola sneaks into town to wreak havoc on the people and residents of our dear State.”

He urged governor Wike to roll up his sleeves and deploy emergency health services especially the infectious disease personnel to ensure that the players and other delegation members who will make contact with hotel staff are properly screened to ensure that they do not leave any Ebola footprint on the hotel facilities and the staff.

“More specifically, the hotel to accommodate the DRC delegation should be carefully selected and orientation for the personnel of such a hotel held to acquaint them with the need to reduce contacts and maintain general high hygiene standards while they host the delegation” Mr. Finebone advised.

He noted that the APC is deeply worried and not sure whether the State government is aware that all major international media outlets are currently highlighting the increasing Ebola spread in the Congo DRC.

“What can be achieved by the federal government through surveillance at the airport of entry should not replace the need for the Rivers State Government to do more to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the people and residents of Rivers State. This should not be another matter over which the governor will play his unending politics with. This is about life and we hope the governor gets it” Mr. Finebone finally declared.

Gov. Bello restates Kogi government support for academic excellence

Praises Natasha Akpoti

Provides scholarship to Fatima Bombom Sani

Kogi State Government is determened to support the education of brilliant students, Governor Yahaya Bello said yesterday.

Governor Bello provided scholarship to the tune of $93,000 to Ms.Fatima Bombom Sani, the best graduating student at the 2015 Call to Bar examination of the Nigerian Law School.

Bello, who spoke while receiving Ms. Fatima Sani, her relatives, alongside Bar. Natasha Akpoti at the Kogi State Government House lamented a situation where academic excellence has not been given therequisite reward in Nigeria.

“The case of Fatima Sani reminds me of how academic excellence has notbeen adequately rewarded in Nigeria. Imagine someone that bagged nine separate awards including “Best Student of the Year and Council of Education Star Award, and nothing was done for her since 2015.”

He applauded Akpoti for taking up the case of Fatima Sani. "It was Bar. Natasha Akpoti who sought the intervention of the Kogi State Governor who was not only surprised but disappointed that Fatima was left unsupported while no information was brought to his office concerning her case.

He charged privileged Nigerians to make more contribution to the education of brilliant students.

“I heard about your exceptional performance at the Nigerian Law School in 2015 and assumed you were recognized and sponsored by the administration of the day. It is unacceptable that such brilliance is not celebrated and promoted. Nevertheless, I shall grant you a personal scholarship to celebrate your exceptionality and help your career-defining goals.”

Governor Yahaya Bello stated that after some inquiries and validation of Fatima's credentials, he in his capacity declared a full scholarship for Fatima to study Masters in Finance Law at the Colombian Law School, in the United States of America.

Bello thanked Natasha Akpoti for her humanitarian efforts in bringing Fatima’s issue while urging Fatima to uphold her academic excellence and make Nigeria proud and return home to serve fatherland. Speaaking, Barr. Akpoti commended Governor Bello for his benevolence and penchant for promoting academic excellence.

“We must celebrate heroes like Fatima in view of motivating young people especially girls towards exceptional educational performances.”

She advised Fatima to go for her studies and come back to contribute her quota to the development of Kogi state and Nigeria Akpoti had on April 27, 2018 via her Facebook page, advocated sponsorship to help Fatima further her academic dreams having emerged as the best graduating student at the 2015 Bar exam where she bagged nine separate awards including “Best Student of the Year and Council of Education Star Award
