Rivers PDP and the fight in Abuja
By Odimegwu Onwumere
On October 9, 2014, the Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, in Rivers State was said to have thrown caution to the winds and
engaged in all for free brawl at the National Campaign Office of the
party in Maitama, Abuja. It was credited that politicians assumed to be
loyalists of the Minister of State for Education, Barr Nyesom Wike, hammered his presumed opponents.
This is not only an embarrassment, but, also, repugnant of a party
that hard earlier warned that Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State
had expressed childish and unwarranted outburst against President
Goodluck Jonathan. The party defending Jonathan, said: “The PDP regrets
that Amaechi has been instigating the people of Kalabari Kingdom to take
up arms against the federal government and promote hatred against the
person of President Goodluck Jonathan who is an Ijaw son over the Soku
oil wells and wonders if he believes in peaceful resolution of
conflicts.
“Besides the fact that Governor Amaechi’s comments and actions are
contraventions of the Electoral Act on campaigns ahead of the 2015
general elections, his comments are also very provocative,
confrontational and subversive against the person and office of the
President and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
“We hereby condemn synchronized and methodical attacks on the person
and office of President Jonathan, his Wife and first Lady of Nigeria and
the PDP. The PDP shall henceforth resist any attempt by Governor
Amaechi to continuously slander, insult, and undermine the office and
person of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“It is unfortunate that a State Governor will not only be speaking
from both sides of his mouth, but also speaks like a motor park tout,
who lacks mannerism, respect, and culture. The PDP hereby warns
Governor Amaechi for the umpteenth time to desist from insulting the
President or prepare to face the consequences, which might be very
grave”.
However, in a press briefing by the Chairman, Rivers State Chapter of
the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Port Harcourt, Dr. Davies Ibiamu
Ikanya condemned in strong terms the act of the PDP, describing it as
an affront on the integrity of the state. He had said, “Nigerians can
now see what we have been experiencing in Rivers State and those who
thought that we were wrongly accusing Rivers PDP and its leader,
Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike, of being agents of
violence, can now see that we have been vindicated.
“Other Nigerians may have been shocked by the disgraceful behaviour
of the characters that call themselves PDP leaders, but to us in Rivers
State, we are not by any means surprised, because we are used to their
violent ways. In fact, the second name of the Rivers PDP is trouble and
they have exhibited this severally in Rivers State. Their stock-in-trade
of causing mayhem and unprovoked attacks against anybody who is not a
member of the drowning party is not strange to us at all.”
“We are fully aware of their impunity, violent acts and antecedents
and that is why Rivers State people have massively rejected the party.
Let us reiterate that no amount of thuggery and intimidation as
associated with PDP will allow such uncivilised and evil party to have a
place in Rivers State anymore. We therefore urge the relatively good
people still in PDP to leave en masse and join APC that will surely form
the next government come 2015 before it is late.”
APC in the state further accused the PDP that it had earlier
assembled ex-militants from neighbouring Bayelsa State to protest in
Port Harcourt some months ago. This, the party said, was an act to send a
wrong signal about the state, even though that the PDP had assembled
some charlatans to insult the personalities of six Northern Governors
led by Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso on their visit to Rivers State to
sympathise with their Rivers State counterpart, Rt. Hon. Chibuike
Amaechi who was under blockade, when the National Leadership of the PDP
wanted Amaechi’s head.
According to reports, those said to have been beaten up by the Rivers
PDP include: “Many opponents of the minister, who came to present
petitions to the Senator Iya Abubakar-led committee were beaten up by
the thugs. Those beaten included a legal practitioner, Mr. Tabotamuno
Dick; a former Commissioner for Water Resources under former Governor
Peter Odili, Mr. Lolo Ibieneye; Prof. Israel Owate, Dr. Sowaribi
Tolofari, Mr. Sara Egbe and Chief Bekinbo Sobrekon. Some journalists
were also harassed while others had either their cameras damaged or
their tape recorders seized. Dick, who is a legal adviser to the Network
for Defence of Democracy and Good Governance, suffered an injury near
his left eye as a result of the beating.”
Notwithstanding, one is not sure why Wike is always in the wrong news
of Rivers State in the past months; and this is a man who wants to rule
Rivers State by 2015, even though that he had vehemently said in the
past that he would make the residents of the state not to sleep with
their two eyes closed. This is a man who has been unable to manage the
affairs of the ministry he was appointed to man, when it’s every day
strike among the institutions across the country.
It is sad that the PDP in Rivers State has not shown up a good
example of leadership qualities, but loves throwing up hammers for the
lucre of power it had christened criticism of the government in Rivers
State. From what happened in Rivers State, when the ever-present
controversial Mbu Joseph Mbu was commissioner of Police Rivers State,
was a preamble of what would become of Rivers State after Amaechi,
should Wike becomes the governor of the state.
Wike’s pre-political outings to that match have shown that the state
may not have a future beyond Amaechi. It is evidence that the PDP is
taking the state back to the days of ‘might is right’. What one had
expected from the PDP in Rivers State after Amaechi left the party was
to stem up vibrant and accurate character to things that would prove
Amaechi wrong, but the party’s shoddy behaviours have continued to make
Amaechi glimmer, even though that many parts of Rivers State have been
left unattended to for politics by the state government.
Instead of the PDP to redefine its hated image, which was the reason
Amaechi left the party, it had rather continued to swim in the turbulent
waters of chaos, like we heard it caused in Abuja. Truth be told, many
Rivers residents are apolitical and are well-meaning that they no longer
stomach failure of leadership of any political party as even was being
exhibited by PDP-led Federal Government.

Rivers APC Hails Mr Nyesom Wike’s directive to Aluu People to vote out PDP
Rivers APC Hails Mr Nyesom Wike’s directive to Aluu People to vote out
PDP
![]() |
| Mr. Chris Finebone |
It is with heart full of joy that the All Progressives Congress [APC],
Rivers State chapter, most unreservedly thank Barr. Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, the
junior Minister for Education for passionately, clearly, unequivocally and
undeniably pleading that the people of Aluu and, by implication, all Rivers
people should vote out the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] in the 2015
general elections.
For us in APC, his call is not surprising following recent heightened
determination by the Ijaws of Rivers State to deny him the
gubernatorial ticket of the PDP in the 2015 elections. We only view the junior
Minister’s present quandary, frustration and devastation with profound
empathy. We are really worried that he could not see it coming given that a
governor of Ikwerre extraction shall have ruled Rivers State for
8 years by May, 2015.
All the same, the two-term chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council;
former Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Government House and now Junior
Minister for Education has spoken reason for once and Rivers people have no
choice than to hearken to his plea.
"I want to appeal to all of you from Aluu community [Rivers State]
that the only way that you can show that you are angry; the only way that you
can show that you are not happy is to do what Prof. Achinewhu said by making
sure you get your voter's card. Don't insult anybody; don't be like a mad man
who would go from one radio to the other and abuse your mother and your father.
The only thing you should do is to keep your voter's card and come 2015, you
show your anger that with this my voter's card, I must make sure that PDP does
not rule Rivers State and Nigeria." – Barr. Nyesom Wike

Rivers to Mark 7th Anniversary of Amaechi’s Supreme Court Victory
Rivers to Mark 7th Anniversary of
Amaechi’s Supreme Court Victory
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a
committee charged with organising the mother of all rallies to mark the seventh
anniversary of the October 25, 2007 historic Supreme Court verdict that
enthroned Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as the authentic, duly elected
Governor of Rivers State instead of Sir Celestine Omehia, the imposed PDP
gubernatorial candidate during the February 2007 polls.
The mega rally which is scheduled to hold October
25, 2014, at the new 65,000-seating capacity stadium in Port Harcourt
constructed by the Amaechi administration to boost sports in Nigeria, will have
Governor Amaechi give an account of his
stewardship to the people of Rivers State, who renewed his mandate during the
2011 elections.
The 2014 Solidarity Rally Convention Initiative
Organising Committee inaugurated on 14th October, 2014 to mobilise
Rivers people as well as well wishers of the State for the big event, has the
State Deputy Governor, Engr. Tele Ikuru, as Chairman of the Central Committee,
with the State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Hon. Barr. Chuma Chinye,
as Secretary. Inaugurated on behalf of Governor Amaechi by Deputy Governor
Ikuru at the Banquet Hall of the Rivers State Government House, the Committee
has the following sub-committees: Mobilisation with Chief Tony Okocha, the
Chief of Staff to Governor Amaechi, as Chairman; Publicity with Commissioner of
Information, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, as Chairman; Health with Dr. Sampson Parker,
the Hon. Commissioner of Health, as Chairman; Venue with Hon. Igo Aguma as
Chairman; Security with Chief Ade Adeogun as Chairman; Traffic with Hon
Confidence Eke as Chairman; Protocol with Hon Henry Halliday the Government
House Chief of Protocol as Chairman; and Entertainment with Hon. Aye Atamah
Pepple member respresenting Bonny Constituency in the Rivers State House of
Asembly as Chairman.
Gov. Amaechi charged members of the Committee to
work assiduously to ensure that only true sons, daughters and friends of Rivers
State are mobilised and not those who share out Rivers land and oil wells to
other states. He, however, explained that the rally is being organised for the
progress and development of the State and not for political campaign or
anything of such.
Responding on behalf of the Committee, Chief Tony
Okocha noted that the members were carefully selected and assured that they
will surely deliver.
In his remarks, the Rivers State Chairman of the
ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, expressed
delight and commended Governor Amaechi for his feats, transparent leadership
and commitment towards the emancipation of Rivers State and her people. “We are
proud for having Gov. Amaechi as our leader,” he stated.
The administration
of Governor Amaechi has embarked upon many projects unprecedented in any other
State in Nigeria that includes, setting up of the Songhai Farms and the N20B
Agric Scheme that revolutionised agriculture in the State, starting off of the
billion Greater Port Harcourt city to decongest the present Port Harcourt City
and construction of one of the best stadia that hosted the last Sports Festival
in the new city. Building and equipping 180 health centres across the state,
constructing many roads and schools, embarking on a monorail first of its kind
in Nigeria which the Governor has promised the completion of the first two
phases by 2014. Upon completion, the monorail would transport 40,000 passengers
daily. Offered scholarships to over 2,000 students in Nigerian Higher
Institutions and spending of about N5bn for her students in foreign Intuitions.
Building a world Class University which when completed will turn out well equipped
graduates that will hold their own in any field and compete with the best in
the world. Offers free education and free health delivery to its people but
stands apart as the only State offering free education, free sandals, free
books and free uniform in Nigeria. About 200 primaries schools have been set up
in 200 communities, a feat that no other state is yet to accomplish.
The Rivers State
Government has invested over N100b per year from 2008 till 2011 in provision of
roads, bridges and Social amenities. In this regard, the Government has engaged
in the construction of 800km roads with 250 already completed. 10 major bridges
under construction with 3 already completed. 20 minor bridges under
construction with four completed, 2flyover/interchange under construction. 6
Land reclamation/shore protection projects at Andoni, Opobo, Buguma, Abalama,
Olombie/Owukiri Island, Oba Ama, Okirika with 1,1400,000km 2 completed. 2 major
markets and a shopping mall under construction (phase 1 of mile 1 market housing
960 shops and two banking halls completed). Apart from all these the Rivers
State Government has built three power stations built at Omoku (150 Mega
watts), Trans-Amadi (130 Mega watts) and Eleme (75 mega watts). By June, 2011,
capacity will be increased to 500 Mega Watts under the $195 million dollars 180
MW gas turbine awarded to Saipem. Seven Transmissions stations (132/33 kilo
volts) and 7 Distribution injection sub-stations 33/11 Kilo Volts built. The
security and freedom the people of Rivers State are now enjoying can only be
appreciated if the scenario and state of Rivers State before Gov Amaechi
assumed office can still be remembered by our people.

Amaechi and the Jonathan Question: It appears Nigerians have been passive
Amaechi and the Jonathan Question: It appears Nigerians have been passive
By Odimegwu Onwumere
Governor
Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State has been fighting a political battle
with the presidency and its arsenal of political impostors that many
Nigerians thought that by now he would have surrendered. But hardly does
a warrior surrender in a battle that he finds to be just unless justice
is achieved, no matter who may be in support or against.
A
warrior does not mind losing his life in such a war, instead of allow
himself to be cowed to accept peace and his voice muffled. For example,
the Biafrans were apparently intimidated to a defeat in the 1967-1970
uncivil war that the federal might carried out against the peoples of
the old Eastern Region. But forty-something years after the war ended in
the battle bushes, Biafrans are still clamouring for justice and equity
in the federal character on the map of the areas that were once known
as the Republic of Biafra.
While
many people who are enjoying the debris they get from the presidency
thought that Amaechi was talking too much, like a warrior he is, he was
credited to have criticized the presidency, as always, when recently he
visited Degema Local Government Area of the state, where he urged the
youth to involve more in sporting activities and developments. Some
folks, especially those from the Ijaw nation, have since then brought
Amaechi to the cleaners, for what they said was an affront on their son,
Jonathan.
But to
be frank, the media handlers of President Goodluck Jonathan and many
others close to him and the PDP in Rivers State, have only shown that
they are too desperate for political offices: Power. They forgot that
their desperations and attacks against Amaechi obviously make Jonathan
look like a tyrant over the undefined issue between Governor Amaechi and
him, of which Jonathan might not be a tyrant.
One such person is Barr Nyesom Wike who happens to be the Minister of Education.
Wike was once quoted as saying that all the borders and airports and
seaports would be closed if Jonathan was announced the winner of the
2015 election in order to stop
Amaechi from escaping from the country. Wike categorically made this
comment, depicting that something that would not follow the rule of law
was cooking against Amaechi in the presidency, therefore buttressing the
axiom which says that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth
speaketh.
Nigerians
saw how Governor Amaechi was insulted and molested like a no-body
severally, when he flew his aircraft to some states in the country. The
molestation that was meted out to him in Osun, during the state’s
election, was one out of the many attempts by the ‘power from above’ to
ridicule Amaechi, who is by the constitution was supposed to be enjoying
the immunity, as enshrined in the constitution. One Gulak who served
the president before he was disgracefully fired was also garrulous that
Amaechi was always in the news for the wrong reasons only known to Gulak.
A keen observer would know that the reason these people have been calling for the head of Amaechi was because of his stoutly approach to unraveling issues that even the angels dread in the presidency. In June this year, his detractors saw it as a crime, when he called for the resistance of tyranny, which he said that was manifest in the country’s leadership. It was at the 3rd annual lecture of the Ogun State Correspondents’ chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, which held at the NUJ secretariat, Iwe Irohin, Abeokuta that he made the comment.
Hear
Amaechi: “Leadership is an extremely important factor, if we are going
to build a nation. Unless and until we have leaders with ability,
integrity, commitment and vision, we cannot succeed as a country. We
cannot succeed by leadership that is not functional…. It is in your
hands to choose and to change the leadership. Nigerians must begin to
insist that they deserve better than they are getting…. We believe that
Nigeria of our dream is Nigeria with leaders who are not only
consistent, transparent, but, also, passionate about our country….
“Can
we say that the crop of leadership at various levels is passionate
about us as a country? Can we say that the current crop of leadership at
the federal level is transparent in their dealings? Can we say that the
present crop of leadership at the federal is consistent with policies
that will build the nation? I think that the answers to that is the
reason why some of us left the Peoples Democratic Party for the All
Progressives Congress…. Nigerians must say no to tyranny. Nigerians must
say no to dictatorship. The people get the kind of leadership they
deserve…. It appears that Nigerians have been docile. Nigerians should
insist that they deserve more than they are getting”.
Amaechi
was barely through with that lecture, before the echo of his speech had
been amplified by those who thought they loved Jonathan and that he was
their better-half than the rest Nigerians. Amaechi was made a demon by
Jonathan’s political yesmen; Amaechi was demonized for sermonizing what
many Nigerians knew were the truths: the South-South and South-East
people for example were just being sentimental in supporting Jonathan to
the detriment of the zones truthful and collective awareness; the zones
were developed in other administrations than in Jonathan’s.
Take for instance; all the Jonathan’s electioneering promises to the South-South and South-East seem like a ruse today, as virtually every federal project is left unattended to. Talk of the East-West Road, Eleme/Onne Road, Enugu/Port Harcourt expressway and many others; the second Niger Bridge and a host of others. Let’s see one federal project that the Jonathan-led government has gotten right, before Amaechi is called names.
When on April 24 2014 that Amaechi repeated his obligation to the All Progressives Congress, APC, they said that he was against Jonathan; Amaechi’s traducers perhaps forgot that Amaechi was only expressing his fundamental rights to speech. His detractors didn’t see the glaring propaganda and blackmail credited to Amaechi’s former Chief of Staff and Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, saying that Amaechi was planning a comeback to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, through the ‘back door’, which was the reason Amaechi made the comment.
All
that they saw was that ‘Amaechi has spoken against Jonathan’. And you
ask whether Amaechi was just saying the truth or blackmailing Jonathan,
just like we have read in the media of the PDP, saying that Amaechi
speaks like a motor-park tout: all for his critiques on the Jonathan-led
government. Those that are against Amaechi, because of the trickily
sentiment they have for Jonathan, should understand that you don’t beat a
child and at the same time, say that he or she should not cry.
Here
is a man whose state’s oil wells in Kalabari and Etche were ceded to
neighbouring Bayelsa, Abia and Imo states by the Jonathan presidency,
because of politics
of animosity, which Amaechi has always ascribed as tyrannical on the
part of the presidency. However, even though that truly Amaechi was not
loyal to the president, should that have warranted this imbecilic
approach against the Rivers State’s revenue generation means? The sad
aspect is that the Kalabaris who now think that Jonathan is their
brother are fighting Amaechi, leaving Jonathan a free man, whereas the
later is the one they should be asking the many questions that they want
Amaechi to provide answers to.
Amaechi
had told them that he was not returning to the PDP and had asked the
people to check if Wike was okay for his talkative statement, which was
that Amaechi was planning to return to the PDP. They wouldn’t allow the
man to rest. But in the words of Amaechi: “I am not returning to the
PDP. That man (Wike), they should check him whether he is okay. I have
finished with the PDP…. Well, I had made a promise that if they returned
the Kalabari oil wells I will return to the party; well that is a
different thing. Let’s see that happen. The real thing is that there are
issues that are fundamentally different between the APC, the PDP and
myself.
“If I am progressive, I must be progressive and I must see it in the type of life I live, what I do and what I say and how I relate with the people, the type of governance. You can’t carry out a socialist programme like this free education, properly free education where children are given laptops, free uniforms, fed and sent home. There are so many of these things we run that are contrary to the ideology of PDP….”
These are happening, whereas in the media, we read from those in the PDP fighting Amaechi, as if ‘he is finished for his checks of Jonathan’, when at the back they go to beg of Amaechi to join the PDP. And Amaechi would say: “Beyond the oil wells, I have told them, they have approached me. If they want, I will call the names of those that approached me, but that is not an issue. There are issues that are fundamentally different. If I am a progressive, it must be seen in the type of life I live, in what I do, how I relate with people and the type of governance.
“I
said people should ignore him (Wike). Are you sure that if I tell the
PDP that I am coming back in 10 days, they will not send a dance party
here? One problem with leadership in Nigeria is that when you are a
president, a governor or a minister, what you say must be factual. You
cannot be part of gossip. So, that young man (Wike), who claims to be
Minister of State for Education, who does not know what it means to be a
minister, is saying I am begging to come back to the PDP. What is the
PDP? I beg you, please, do not ever ask me question about that young man
(Wike), because I will not answer you”.
It
is laughable that the likes of Wike want Amaechi to exhibit total
loyalty to Jonathan, whereas they do not want to show same to Amaechi,
being their state governor. Notwithstanding, it behooves on every
intelligent person to support against any imposition of governorship
aspirant by the presidency in Rivers State against the will of the
Rivers masses. This is because according to a statement made available
by the Chief Press
Secretary to Governor Amaechi, Mr. David Iyofor, partly said, “The
people of Rivers State will strongly and bravely resist any attempt by
anyone or institutions, including the presidency, to unconstitutionally
install the preferred PDP aspirant as Governor of the State, now or in
the 2015 election.
“There is no provision in the Nigerian Constitution and laws for the ‘installation’ of a preferred aspirant as governor of a state by the presidency. What our laws prescribe is a free and fair election that must be devoid of police and security forces coercion, harassment and intimidation of voters.
“Rivers voters must be allowed to and will freely choose and elect their governor in the 2015 elections. It is their inalienable democratic right that they will not and will never surrender to anyone or institution, including The Presidency.
“We must warn that the looming danger ahead for our polity and our country is indeed ominous, if this noxious script is acted out. This is an avoidable crisis that must be avoided by all parties mentioned in the reports”.
Who doubts Amaechi when he talks that a tyrant resides in Aso Rock?

Rivers APC Berates PDP for Disgracing State in Abuja
Rivers APC Berates PDP for Disgracing State in Abuja
By Nwaorgu Faustinus
The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has come
down hard on the State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for
disgracing the State in the Federal Capital, Abuja. Rivers APC made the
condemnation while reacting to the unruly behaviour of Rivers State PDP leaders
who engaged in a show of shame at the PDP National Headquarters on 9th
October, 2014, brazenly exchanging blows during a reconciliation committee
sitting for the party’s chapters in the Niger Delta region of the country.
“Nigerians can now see what we have been experiencing in Rivers State
and those who thought that we were wrongly accusing Rivers PDP and its leader,
Minister of State for Education Nyesom Wike, of being agents of violence, can
now see that we have been vindicated,” Rivers APC said in a statement issued in
Port Harcourt and signed by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.
“Other Nigerians may have been shocked by the disgraceful behaviour of
the characters that call themselves PDP leaders but to us in Rivers State we
are not by any means surprised because we are used to their violent ways. In
fact, the second name of the Rivers PDP is trouble and they have exhibited this
severally in Rivers State. Their stock-in-trade of causing mayhem and
unprovoked attacks against anybody who is not a member of the drowning party is
not strange to us at all,” Ibiamu said in the statement.
He recalled how PDP leaders in Rivers State organised ex-militants from
neighbouring Bayelsa State to march round Port Harcourt some months ago in
order to cause a breakdown of law and order and mobilised some unruly
youths to molest six Northern Governors led by Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso who
came to visit and sympathise with their Rivers State counterpart, Rt. Hon.
Chibuike Amaechi who was under siege during the period of exhibition of
impunity by the National Leadership of PDP under the then leader, Alh Tukur who
supervised the illegal suspension of Governor Amaechi for defeating Governor
Jona Jang of Plateau State in the Governors Forum election with 19 votes to 16
votes contrary to the calculation and thinking of the Presidency who believe
that 16 is higher than 19 votes and that five lawmakers at that time can
impeach Governor Amaechi in a State House of Assembly of 32 members.
“We are fully aware of their impunity, violent acts and antecedents and
that is why Rivers State people have massively rejected the party. Let us
reiterate that no amount of thuggery and intimidation as associated with PDP
will allow such uncivilised and evil party to have a place in Rivers State
anymore. We therefore urge the relatively good people still in PDP to leave en
masse and join APC that will surely form the next government come 2015 before
it is late,” the statement concluded.
