The
Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Bro.
Felix Obuah has once again warned residents and those doing business in Port
Harcourt, the State capital and its environs to desist from dumping wastes
outside the approved dumping hours of 6 pm to 12 midnight, and at unauthorized
receptacles.
He
said the uncooperative attitude of these persons would no longer be tolerated
as the Agency’s monitoring team would arrest and prosecute defaulters.
Bro.
Obuah who gave the warning shortly after he carried out routine checks in some
sections of Port Harcourt, Thursday morning, described these acts of
indiscriminate dumping of wastes as sabotaging the efforts of RIWAMA at
ensuring that Port Harcourt and its environs are clean at all times.
At
Ikoku-Mile 3 bypass, Bro. Obuah warned motor mechanics and spare-parts dealers
to stop throwing wastes into the Nta-Nwogba canal, stressing that such act
would cause blockage with resultant flooding in this season of heavy rainfall.
The
RIWAMA boss who further took his routine checks to Ikwerre Road, Okija, Ojoto,
Emenike and Eagle Island, warned residents and those doing business in the
areas to observe sanitation rules and properly bag their refuse and ensure to
dispose them at RIWAMA approved time and receptacles.
Bro.
Obuah also warned service providers against abandoning their compactors at
dumpsites and directed the immediate removal of all such compactors within 24
hours of this notice.
At
Elioparanwo Road in Obio Akpor Local Government Area, Bro. Obuah directed the
service provider in charge of the road to remove the compactor with heap of
refuse on it immediately or have himself to blame.
The
RIWAMA Sole Administrator also moved to Aba Road where he directed the
contractor in charge of Rumuokwurusi Junction to clear the wastes in the area
in the next 24 hours.
